Keeping it simple.

June 6, 2019

Sometimes I think I’m too busy for meditation, even though I love to meditate. I am busy, like everyone else, but saying I’m too busy for meditation is like saying I’m too busy to breathe. I just make it out to be more complicated in my mind than it really is.

When I taught yoga and meditation, people would say, “I don’t know how to meditate.” They thought it was a big complicated process that you had to learn from a guru on a mountain top. But meditation can be as simple as sitting, breathing, and letting your mind go.

Usually when I think I’m too busy to meditate, what I’m really thinking is that I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m unsure about my work, I don’t have a plan for the Big Picture, and I’m scared. I think that being busy is going to prove that I’m okay. If I really want to be okay, though, I have to stop being so busy and get quiet for a little while.

Meditation can be as simple as I want. I can sit and breathe, or sit and watch what’s going on outside my window. I can do the dishes. I can take a walk. I can knit. I just have to keep it simple. That lets me start letting go of the idea that I need to know what I’m doing. Then, generally, it turns out that whatever I’m doing is okay. And so am I.

There are some simple meditations in Yoga Mind, which you can find here.
